Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on 14 September 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, was elected the 267th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on 8 May 2025, becoming the first American and the first pope ever elected from the Augustinian Order.
A member of the Order of St Augustine, Pope Leo XIV dedicated much of his early ministry to missionary work in Peru, where he served in various capacities, including as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. He also held the position of Prior General of the Augustinian Order from 2001 to 2013, during which he visited numerous countries, reflecting his commitment to global outreach.
In 2014, Pope Leo XIV was appointed a cardinal by Pope Francis, who recognized his years of service and dedication to the Church.
Fluent in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese, Pope Leo XIV has been recognised for his ability to connect with diverse communities.
Upon his election, he chose the name Leo XIV in honour of Pope Leo XIII, renowned for the 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which laid the foundation for modern Catholic social teaching.
May the Lord bless Pope Leo XIV with courage, compassion, and enduring grace. May his heart remain open to the cries of the poor and the hopes of the faithful. Under his gentle leadership, may the Church grow ever more united in love and truth.
